Dressed to impress

How do high-flying women get dressed for work? Alison Taylor finds out

I often have to change my clothes several times a day. For instance, this morning I've already worn academic dress over my red and beige jersey wrap dress while I did a reading in chapel. Then there are meetings to consider and even sporting events.

Yesterday I went to watch the rugby so I wore leggings and boots with a dress over them, a cardigan and a short fur coat. If there's a reception for parents interested in the school I'll dress somewhere between evening and work wear. The point of the occasion is to welcome people and be social, so it's nice to make an effort.

I've always loved clothes, not because I'm obsessed or silly but because I had a glamorous grandmother who taught me that I could look better than I actually am! My mother would never have gone into town to the shops without making an effort and I'm the same. It's about presenting myself in the best possible way so I can do what I do comfortably.

I bought this green velvet suit for my 50th birthday. It has an interesting hourglass cut that really plays to my strengths without showing off acres of cleavage. Discreet but still quite sexy.

I've got seven or eight evening gowns and I wear them a lot. There are many black-tie events connected to the school and I also attend events in my capacity as governor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I bought this gown in New York. It flatters me because it cuts in at the waist and has a little bit of extra detail with the 'fantail' at the front.

I think that my dress style says, 'Here's somebody who means business.' I'm not going to be sitting in the back row, but there's nothing flippant and frivolous about it. I go for unusual things I might have picked up on my travels - handbags and scarves.

A typical look for me is a dress that pulls in at the waist, patent-leather shoes and a short red cashmere coat - it's fun. I don't tend to buy labels but I have got some pieces in the wardrobe that are really special by Thierry Mugler, Versace and Armani. The other thing I believe is really important is what you wear underneath. I absolutely swear by Rigby & Peller.

My pupils seem to like the way I dress. Obviously the girls at Oxford High, where I used to work, noted what I was wearing, but I'm surprised the boys at Abingdon do. In the school magazine they welcomed me by saying I'd come with an 'extensive and thoroughly impressive CV and extensive and colourful wardrobe'!

The last thing I would want to look like is what people call a typical headmistress. That's not my look and it's not my leadership style, either. I've never been part of a mould in any respect.

Lucy Alexander, 42, hedge fund sales manager

In 1990, when I first started working in the city, I was told that women should wear skirt suits not trouser suits; trousers were for men. Back then it was really hard to find clothes; there weren't any women's shops in the Square Mile.

I went on a holiday to Bangkok with my sister and had three suits made - classic pencil skirts and padded jackets. I would never wear them now; they're dated and very 'power', and it's far easier to pull on a dress than a jacket, skirt and blouse.

I don't have a dress code for the office. I like to wear fitted dresses by Michael Kors, Paule Ka, Joseph and Britt Lintner, a friend of mine who also works in hedge funds but designs beautifully tailored dresses that are perfect for work. She wanted to bridge the gap between office wear and high fashion and has the City woman in mind. Sarah Brown is also a fan.

In finance if you think about your clothes too much people will probably say you're rather frivolous. It's all down to the content of the meeting, at the end of the day, but I think it's important to make a good impression. I am interested in fashion, too, and I do like shopping. My Italian grandmother was exceptionally glamorous so it's something I've grown up with.

I hardly ever wear jackets; I feel constrained by them. I prefer a smart coat or trench. I'm 5ft 2in so I always wear high, high shoes, usually Louboutin or YSL to look smarter and taller. If I'm walking to meetings I wear flats and switch. In the evening I might wear the same dress but change my shoes, bag and jewellery. I might slip into sandals or something more sparkly, and add a cocktail ring and earrings if we're taking clients to dinner or the opera.

When I had a year off from the City I set up a business designing semi-precious jewellery with a friend, so I have quite a lot of pieces. It's nice to wear something that's personal to you.

Smart clothes have become more stylish, comfortable and adaptable. You can get on a plane, go to meetings and then straight to dinner. There's also a lot more help available. I love websites like Net-a-porter because they're great if you're busy. They also give great styling ideas for accessories and shoes.

Women used to feel the need to blend in, to dress like men. Now the hemlines have gone up and the shoes are higher. It's more fun.

How to Lose 30 lbs in 6 Months Without Dieting

A new weight loss product is causing quite a stir in the scientific community, not to mention media outlets across the country. Why? Because it’s proven to help you drop pounds without changes to your diet and without adding exercise.

The SENSA® Weight-Loss System uses flavorless food sprinkles called Tastants that prompt the brain to trigger a feeling of fullness, causing people to eat smaller portions.

In one of the largest clinical studies ever conducted on a non-pharmaceutical weight loss product, over 1,400 people were given Sensa and told not to diet or change their exercise routine. All they did was sprinkle, eat and lose weight. In fact, the average weight loss among the group was 30.5 lbs. The placebo group only lost an average of 2 lbs.

The man behind Sensa, Dr. Alan Hirsch, is a board-certified neurologist and the nation’s leading authority on the science of smell and taste. He has been featured on Extra, Dateline NBC, The Wall Street Journal and countless other shows and newspapers across the country.

The Link Between Sense of Smell and Weight Loss

It all began with observations made by Dr. Hirsch over the course of 25 years of clinical research. He noticed significant weight gain among patients who suffered severe head trauma and had lost their sense of smell.

He hypothesized that if losing one’s sense of smell resulted in weight gain, an enhanced sense of smell would result in weight loss.

“Contrary to what most people think, hunger is not controlled by your stomach - it's controlled by your brain, specifically the hypothalamus,” Dr. Hirsch explains. And based on findings from the clinical study, he concludes that “certain scents can help set in motion a process that triggers your hypothalamus to send signals telling your body you've had enough to eat.”

"What we've done is found a way to deliver the scents that can be added to food, in the form of flavorless crystals called Tastants, to prevent people from overeating."

Sprinkle Your Way to Thin

After experimenting with various scent combinations, Dr. Hirsch and his team have finally developed what may be the key to permanent weight loss--no stimulants, no drugs or harmful ingredients, no counting calories, and best of all, no change in lifestyle required.

The unique combination of scented, flavorless food sprinkles used in the study is now found in Sensa, the only weight loss system that contains the patent-pending technology.

The company behind Sensa is so confident you’ll see results, they’re allowing new customers a chance to try Sensa free for 30 days
. See the weight loss results for yourself before you decide if you want to pay for it.

Jamiroquai sing on X Factor – Jay Kay backtracks!

October 31st, 2010 by Lisa McGarry.

Jamiroquai made their X Factor debut tonight and not because Jay Kay wanted to!

The front man had previously slated the show and it’s female judges in an interview with The Sun. He called Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole “f****** useless” and added:

“What are they going to tell me about f****** music?

He went on:

“What the f***. When have you ever done anything? You’re useless. The pair of you. I mean you look great and I’d like to f****** s**g you but that’s all.”

“I just don’t like the w**** stuff I have to do. F****** X Factor and that. I’m going to have to sing in front of f****** amateurs. Do you know what I mean?”

However, after singing his new single tonight, Jay appeared sheepish and told Dermot O’Leary:

“I have to say, I’ve had reservations about appearing on the show but I’ve had a wonderful day.

Everybody’s been charming, it’s been wonderful. ”

After the presenter asked if he had met the judges before, Jay quipped ‘well I’ve met two of them.’ Dannii and Cheryl proceeded to shoot him some of the dirtiest looks we have ever seen. We think this singer has had his card well and truly marked!

Jamiroquai’s Jay Kay would be ‘up for’ X Factor judging role

November 1st, 2010 by Lisa McGarry.

Jay Kay has revealed that he would quite like to sit on the X Factor panel.

The Jamiroquai frontman, who performed his latest single ‘White Knuckle Ride’ on last night’s results show told The Sunday Mirror that he would be ‘brutal’ and ‘ruthless’ on the show. He also admitted that Simon Cowell isn’t quite as bad as he first imagined.

On the possibility of a judging role, Jay told The Sunday Mirror:

“I’m quite up for doing it. I’d be brutal, relentless and ruthless. I’d be saying, ‘You’re having a laugh, you’re not up to it, mate’. There would be none of that, ‘I think you were quite good. If you try to improve with this…’ I’d be like, ‘Forget it, go back to flipping burgers. Hop it’.”

He added:

“Many years ago I slated Simon to death, but it’s water under the bridge now and he’s actually quite a personable chap. Some of his comments on X Factor are legendary. These people are asking for it and, to be honest, I’d say exactly the same thing to them. Hats off to him.”

Jay may like Simon but he certainly doesn’t share the same admiration for the female panel members. In a recent interview with The Sun he called Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole “f****** useless” and added:

“What are they going to tell me about f****** music?

He went on:

“What the f***. When have you ever done anything? You’re useless. The pair of you. I mean you look great and I’d like to f****** s**g you but that’s all.”

“I just don’t like the w**** stuff I have to do. F****** X Factor and that. I’m going to have to sing in front of f****** amateurs. Do you know what I mean?”

However, after singing his new single tonight, Jay appeared sheepish and tried to save face with Dermot O’Leary. He said:

“I have to say, I’ve had reservations about appearing on the show but I’ve had a wonderful day.

Everybody’s been charming, it’s been wonderful. ”

Sir Elton John slates the X Factor again

November 1st, 2010 by Lisa McGarry.

Sir Elton John has hit out at The X Factor for the second time this month.

The ‘Your Song’ singer reportedly told Chris Evans that he thinks contestants will struggle with the short lived nature of fame, that reality TV shows often generate.

The Sunday Mirror, quotes him as saying:

“You’re putting the cart before the horse and it’s awful to be famous and then not famous. My fears are for the artists.

“It’s just hard for those acts being used to TV. And to come off and go out on tour, sometimes they don’t have the experience to back that up.”

In a recent interview with Metro, Elton also slated the ITV show, saying that former winners Alexandra Burke and Leona Lewis are at the mercy of song writers, instead of developing their own creativity. He claimed:

‘It’s become boring, a***-paralysingly brain crippling.’

‘TV vaults you to superstardom and then you have to back it up,’ he said.

‘Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke are at the mercy of the next song they can get. It’s important they write their own songs, so they’re not at the mercy of anyone. Songwriters today are pretty awful, which is why everything sounds the same. Contemporary pop isn’t very inspiring.’

X Factor: Former co-star describes Katie Waissel as a “self-absorbed, big-headed drama queen”

November 1st, 2010 by Lisa McGarry.

Another old acquaintance of Katie Waissel has lined up to take a pop at her.

Kristen Quantrell, who starred with the X Factor finalist in online reality show Green Eyed World, said that all the rumours about her desperate, fame hungry ways are true.

She told the Sunday Mirror: “She is a self-absorbed, big-headed drama queen who has earned good money as a singer and trampled all over people she considers beneath her. Even without X Factor fame she was a monster. I dread to think how much worse she will get.

“She was just absolutely desperate to be part of the celebrity scene. I remember once a guy tried to chat her up at a bar and she completely blanked him – until he told her he was a musician and that he’d won a Grammy.

“The moment she heard that her eyes just lit up and she made a massive play for him. But he saw through her and said, ‘Now do you want to f**k me?’. She just slunk away after that.”

Quantrell also claims that Waissel was only picked for the reality TV show, after she slept with the show’s producer Philipp Schwinger.

“[The director] hadn’t wanted Katie in the first place but Philipp fought for her,” she said. “The gossip was she’d had sex with him after the first audition. At the time we thought it was a bit weird because Philipp was a lot older than her, but thinking back I’m sure it helped her get the part.

“As far as Philipp was concerned Katie was just a fling, but at one stage when we were filming in Las Vegas, Katie said she wanted to marry him. She was crazy enough to do something like that but Philipp just cringed.”

Belle Amie voted off the X Factor

October 31st, 2010 by Lisa McGarry.

Belle Amie have been eliminated from the X Factor.

The girls found themselves in the bottom two alongside Katie Waissel. Katie chose to sing Trust In Me by Etta James for her save me song, while the girls chose Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson.

They had a lot to make up for. Katie wowed the judges on last night’s show with her rendition of ‘Bewitched’, while the panel were lukewarm about Belle Amie’s version of Venus. After their performance Dannii Minogue said:

“Girls it was fun but I think, when you hear it back, the vocals were not on track. I think you needed to put as much effort into the vocals as the staging. ”

Tonight, the performance was all about the singing, however it just wasn’t good enough. The first line was weak and the only one who really stood out for us throughout the song was blonde beauty Sophia Wardman. Rebecca Creighton finished the song badly and was completely out of time with what was a deafeningly loud backing track!

On the other hand, Katie delivered another stunning performance, full of emotion and feeling. It was an easy choice for the judges….or it should have been.

Cheryl saved Katie, Simon saved Belle Amie, Dannii saved Katie and Louis Walsh, with the deciding vote opted to send the result to deadlock. Dermot revealed that Katie had received more public votes and so she progressed to next week, while the doomed girl group were sent home.

X Factor 2010: Rihanna wows with ‘Only Girl (In The World)’,

October 31st, 2010 by Lisa McGarry.

Rihanna made her second appearance on the X Factor this evening.

The Barbadian pop singer sang her newest single ‘Only Girl (In The World)’, from her ‘s fifth studio album, Loud. She was last seen on The X Factor in 2009, when she sang her edgy track ‘Russian Roulette.’

She appeared behind a banquet table, complete with about 30 guests. Her baby pink dress was crazy but we loved it. It did remind us a little of a nappy, but we are well used to Ri-Ri being a little out there.

The track is a catchy number with a fabulous dance beat. She definitely sang at least some parts of it live and we found ourselves humming along by the time she finished. We thought it was probably the best guest performer on the series to date.

Bon Jovi ROCK Living On A Prayer on The X Factor

October 31st, 2010 by Lisa McGarry.

Bon Jovi returned to The X Factor stage tonight and performed their iconic song ‘Living On A Prayer.’

The American band last appeared on the ITV show in 2009, when they showcased their song ‘We Weren’t Born To Follow.’

The rock legends were the first of three guest performers on this evening’s results show and for us, these guys can do no wrong. Yes they are still trotting out songs that are decades old but they are still so listenable and Jon Bon Jovi is as easy on the eye as ever.

X Factor 2010: Is Cher Lloyd like Usher?

October 31st, 2010 by Lisa McGarry.

X Factor vocal coach Savan Kotecha has compared Cher Lloyd to US R&B legend Usher.

The American songwriter has been assisting Yvie Burnett in training and rehearsing with the finalists since they made the live shows and he thinks 17 year old Cher has real potential to be a huge recording artist.

Speaking to The News Of The World Savan said:

“I compare Cher to Usher who I have done a lot of work with. She has all the instincts of a big urban artist.

“She could get a record deal right now. That’s how good she is.”

Despite criticism of her vocal skills and claims that she can only rap but not sing, Savan added:

“She has a fantastic voice. She’s also the sweetest girl but when she gets on the stage she knows how to turn it on.”

Cher wowed Simon Cowell on last night’s show, after he declared her rendition of ‘Stay’ as the best performance of the series. After her song Cowell said:

I don’t agree with Louis, I don’t think that was the performance of the night. I think it was the performance of the entire season. Because you are special, you proved a point this week, you’re not somebody who just does one thing. You’re only 17 years old and that performance, by any standard, was absolutely incredible.

Dannii Minogue added:

Cher there are a couple of performers tonight that have taken the theme and not made it gimmicky and you’re definitely one of them. That was a beautiful performance. What I loved about it was that you’ve come out with a fighting spirit every week but you brought your vulnerability to the stage tonight.

X Factor: Geri Halliwell to manage Belle Amie?

November 1st, 2010 by Lisa McGarry.

Geri Halliwell has reportedly offered to manage former X Factor contestants Belle Amie.

Ginger Spice met some of the band members when she acted as a guest judge on the show earlier this year and Sinitta claims that she saw some potential in the group.

Simon Cowell’s ex told the Sunday Mirror: “Geri has spoken to Simon and the girls about getting involved and possibly managing Belle Amie.

“People always think that’s because girls vote on The X Factor and girls are only interested in boybands. But I don’t think that’s the case. Look at the Spice Girls.

“I think girls want girlbands they can look up to. Last week there was a gang of teenage girls waiting outside the studio to see Belle Amie. They couldn’t believe it. I told them, ‘Go out there and say hi – those are your fans, they’re here to see you’.”

Belle Amie were eliminated from the X Factor tonight, after finding themselves in the singoff against 24 year old Katie Waissel.

Solo ~ Kate Havnevik

I know it’s late but i wanted to call
No everything is fine
There’s nothing wrong
Just needed to talk
I hoped you would answer this time
‘Cos I’m so low
Everyone’s speeding
but I’m still going slow
And I’m so low
Everyone glows
I see love affairs
Everywhere
But no-one will do
But you
If we could speak
we could have a good row.
which off course I’d win
What I mean is I’m missing you now.
This freedom is wasted on me
‘Cos I’m so low
Everyone’s speeding
But I’m still going slow
And I’m so low
Everyone glows
I see love affairs
Everywhere
But no-one will do
But you
‘Cos I’m so low
Everyone’s speeding
But I’m still going slow
And I’m so low
Everyone glows
I see love affairs
Everywhere
But no-one will do
But you

life is cool

I never really try to be positive
I'm too damm busy being negative
So focused on what I get
And never understand what it means to live
You know we all love to just complain
But maybe we should try to rearrange
There's always someone
Who's got it worse than you

(chorus)
My life is so cool
My life is so cool
From a different point of view

(verse 2)
We're all so busy tryin'to get ahead
Got a pillow of fear when we go to bed
We're never satisfied
The grass is greener on the other side
We get distracted by our jealousy
Forget it's in our hands to stop the agony
Will you ever be content
On your side of the fence?

(verse 3)
Maybe you're the guy who needs a second chance
Maybe you're the girl who's never asked to dance
Maybe you're lonely soul
A single mother sacred and all alone
Gotta remember we live what we choose
It's not what you say It's what you do
And the life you want
Is the life you have to make

SISSEL《Should It Matter》

I look at you
Please don't walk away
I see you're about to
There is just something I'd really like to say
so please don't walk away
I know that you're there
Still you pretend you're not
Yes I know it hurts
I have also felt the pain
So should it matter
What I do or what I've done
As long as in my heart
You're still the only one
I hear you say it
But I don't think you understand
I can be trusted now, I swear to you I can
It's been a year
A memory from my past
I know what I did wrong
I wish to change
Just to make it last
But I guess it's been to long
Easy to move on
To forget about it all
Is that what you do, hoping I will be gone
So should it matter
What I do or what I've done
As long as in my heart
You're still the only one
I hear you say it
But I don't think you understand
I can be trusted now, I swear to you I can
If you got to know me again
Maybe then - maybe then
We could see what we should do
But that's all up to you
I'll be waiting for you
So should it matter
What I do or what I've done
As long as in my heart
You're still the only one
I hear you say it
But I don't think you understand
I can be trusted now, I swear to you I can
I hear you say it
But I don't think you understand
I can be trusted now, I swear to you I can

The Fray--never say never

The song is in the episode of "Transformers 2 " , singer The Fray, the song also appeared in the U.S. drama "Vampire Diaries".

Some things we don't talk about
Rather do without and just hold the smile
Falling in and out of love
Ashamed and proud of, together all the while
  You can never say never
  While we don't know when
  But time and time again
Younger now than we were before
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Picture, you're queen of everything
Far as the eye can see under your command
I will be your guardian when all is crumbling
  I'll steady your hand
  You can never say never
  While we don't know when
But time, time and time again
Younger now than we were before
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  We're pulling apart
And coming together again and again
  We're pulling apart
  But we pull it together
  Pull it together again
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go
  Don't let me go

Louis Vuitton Necklace

Louis Vuitton Handbag Chain

Pixie Lott --Turn It Up

Baby, its over, we both know, lets go forward.
I love you, but in a different way, I love you, forever.
Now that we've come to the end of a story-y and I know that it's gonna be hard for me.
Might hurt some, might get too much, but I gotta let it be.
As the world turns around and we go different places, new things, new dreams, new faces.
Wanna shake up, when we break up, but we keep our memories.

'coz I know you can't stay, so I won't be waiting, anticipating for the fall.
We had our time, baby, so I won't be waiting, anticipating for the call.
Turn it up, turn it up for the people that say "we're moving on and we'll be okay".
Turn it up, turn it up for the people that say "we're moving on and we'll be okay".

Baby, it's better, and I want you, to be happy.
Sometimes people find that it's so hard just to say goodbye.
it ain't easy the more and the more you try.
So they'll be cheating, be decieving, but not me and my boy.
We understand that we're friends and it just ain't working, no point in the constant fighting.
So we'll be grown ups, for a minute, and admit that we're just not in it.

I know you can't stay, so I won't be waiting, anticipating for the fall.
We had our time, baby, so I won't be waiting, anticipating for the call.

I might lose my mind for a while, but I'll be fine (fiiiine).
Have you heard there's this thing that heals, and it's called time (tiiiime).
Clock can tick away, happy will fall in place.
and though, my heart will break, a new me will fill the space.

I know you can't stay, so I won't be waiting, anticipating for the fall.
